Prescription Records Hacked 4 Times
Breach Affects 27,000 at University of Texas at Arlington
The university's office of information technology recently detected that the server had been compromised on Feb. 19 and April 28 last year and again on Jan. 23 and Feb. 10 this year. The records on the server, dating from 2000 to 2010, were for students, faculty and staff who received or filled a prescription at the Student Health Center.
Of the 27,000 prescription records on the server, 2,048 contained Social Security numbers, according to the university. Other information that may have been exposed included names, addresses, prescription names, amount spent and diagnostic codes. No credit card information or medical records were on the server.
"There is no evidence to suggest that the compromised information is being used in an unauthorized manner as a result of this incident," the university said in a statement. The university is notifying all those affected as required under the HITECH Act's breach notification rule. Those whose Social Security numbers were on the server are being offered free credit monitoring for up to a year.
