Ukrainian Hacktivists Claim Responsibility
NATO Sites Hit with DDoS Attacks

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has confirmed that two of its websites were hit by a distributed-denial-of-service attack on March 15 that caused intermittent site downtime.

A hacktivist group calling itself Cyber Berkut is claiming responsibility for the attack, referencing the incident in a March 16 Twitter post. The group apparently includes pro-Russian Ukrainians who are angry over what they see as NATO interference in their country, according to Reuters.

In a statement provided to Information Security Media Group March 17, NATO says the integrity of its data and systems was not affected during the DDoS attack. NATO's Brussels website and the Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence website in Tallinn, Estonia, were affected, according to the statement.

The attack appears to have started on March 15 and lasted into March 16, according to tweets from NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu.

"Our cyberdefense experts were able to restore these websites, and at no time was NATO's internal communications systems affected by this attack by hacktivists," a NATO official says in the statement.

NATO also acknowledges the public declaration by the hacktivists, but "given the inherent complexities in the attribution of these attacks, we will not speculate as to the authors or reasons behind this incident."
