Organizations have struggled to understand why APIs are so strategic even though they're an intrinsic way businesses interface with their software, says Checkmarx CEO Emmanuel Benzaquen.

APIs pose a particular risk to organizations where traveling data causes them to be exposed, and API abuse is slated to become one of the most common types of web application data breaches. Benzaquen says it's important to ensure that customers understand API attacks well, and Checkmarx has put all of its application security tools in one place to ensure they communicate and correlate with one another (see: Synopsys, Checkmarx Top Gartner MQ for App Security Testing).

"It comes back to innovation and research," Benzaquen says. "If you don't do research and you don't look for these things, you're just going to be followers in that industry. I think it's always important to lead with momentum."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Benzaquen also discusses:

  • How Checkmarx's approach to supply chain security differs from competitors;
  • How Checkmarx connects supply chain security and application security testing;
  • The impact of layoffs in December on Checkmarx's technology and R&D strategy.

Benzaquen is a French-born entrepreneur with a dual career spanning Silicon Valley and Israel over the past 25 years. Leading Checkmarx since its inception in 2006, he brought the company from vision to reality in pioneering and providing application security solutions to the masses. Prior to Checkmarx, Benzaquen held numerous leadership positions in the enterprise software, IT and semiconductor industries for companies including Virage Logic, which was acquired by Synopsys; Argonaut RISC Core, which completed its IPO in 2000; Embedded Performance, which was acquired by Mentor Graphics; and Illuminator, which was acquired by Dell EMC.
